All Activity. Leaderboard. Just wanted to get a poll on varying options of most efficient yet safest way to mill black powder without a ball mill. I used to use a coffee grinder however the last time I milled some I resorted to a mortar and pestle instead, which was far too much work. I know ball milling is the most common...
I use black powder in my work. By the ton. When I checked inventory at year's end, we had about 800lb. of various types of bulk BP in the magazine, not counting many more tons on site as part of finished display fireworks I made my first batch of BP at about 16 Converted my Sears Roebuck Co. rock polisher into a ball mill...

I thought I would try it out as a ball mill, so I cast up a large batch of .575" (58 cal) hard round lead balls. The trouble is that 30 pounds of lead balls only fills it to about 1/3 full. I know that it is desirable to have the mill 1/2 full of media. Will I get acceptable efficiency with only 1/3 of the mill full of media?

Black powder MUST be made in a ball mill to work properly. A ball mill is a rotating drum with dozens of lead balls inside. The 3 chemicals are loaded into the ball mill, along with the lead balls, sealed shut and allowed to rotate for anywhere between 1 and 24 hours. As the ball mill rotates, the lead balls will crush the chemicals together ...

The ideal milling method for optimized black powder milling involves what is called "cascading" action. This is a continuous flow of media file: ... Figure 2 shows the active grinding area for an optimally charged ball mill. As the drum rotates, the media should ideally form a sloping pile that maintains a 45 degree angle so that there is a ...
The potassium nitrate is a bit tougher to mill completely in such a small jar. If the media is larger than 3/8", the efficiency drops off. I only mill the nitrate for 2 hours though. So, with 8 hours of total milling time (with no risk of explosion), you can produce 300 grams of excellent black powder better powder than if you milled it all ...

A ball mill, a type of crusher, is a cylindrical device used to grind chemicals or mix compositions. Ball mills rotate around a horizontal axis, partially filled with the material to be ground plus the grinding medium, ideally non sparking milling media like lead balls. An internal cascading effect reduces the material to a fine powder.
Gather the cloth strainer to remove the retained solid matter; wring out the resulting "ball" and squeeze it well to remove as much moisture as possible. 14.) Line a baking sheet with newspaper and put in the powder retained in the cloth strainer; break up the ball by hand and distribute the powder well on the paper.
It is when one gets into milling mixed compositions like black powder that the dangers arise. We simply don't want sparks generated in the mill jar during that process for obvious reasons. Each type of media has its advantages and disadvantages. I've used my stainless steel media for hundreds of mill runs with no problems.

the milling media in the other jar. The main issues are heavy hard impact of the media on sparking surfaces and static. discharges to the chemical compound while emptying the mill jar. Minimizing static potential is something everyone talks about. but very few people do anything to reduce the risk.
I followed Ned's article on Skylighter when I ball mill, but being a noob, not sure if I should stick to this process or not. I use 6" PVC jars filled with a 20oz charge, mill for one hour, then use it for burst, lift, etc. So far, only milling for one hour works fine for lifting my 4" shells(i use ) as well as coating the rice hulls for ...

Ball milling Black Powder with ceramic media Hello all mad scientists out there! I would like to know if anyone has any experience with ball milling Black Powder with alumina balls and whether it is hopeless to attempt to, or not? The reason I ask is that I am a bit in doubt whether this particular type of ceramics are sparking or not.
Yttria stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) media for planetary and roller ball mills. YSZ is one of the most universal ceramic milling medias. It is very corrosion resistant, very wear resistant, hard, stable in acid solutions, and because of these properties they are essentially noncontaminating to your sample. Density: g/cm 3.
