This photo appeared on the cover of Coal Age Magazine's Dec. 1969 edition and carried the story of the brand new 4250W Bucyrus Erie dragline, the "Big Muskie". The machine had a 310 ft. boom, a 220 bucket and weighed in at 14000 ton. The machine began regular service in May of 1969.
Huge machines called draglines—some the size of an entire city block, able to scoop up to 100 tons in a single load—push rock and dirt into nearby streams and valleys, forever burying waterways. Coal companies use explosives to blast as much as 800 to 1,000 feet off the tops of mountains in order to reach thin coal seams buried deep below.

Central Ohio Coal Co. had chosen this immense machine because the mine property extended over 110,000 acres of hilly terrain and made the use of a dragline versus a shovel to be more profitable at the levels of earth the coal was located in. It also allowed the coal company to better carryout their reclamation plans.
Ursa Major in 2009. The Ursa Major (lit. Great Bear) at Black Thunder Coal Mine, Wyoming, is the largest dragline excavator currently in use in North America and the third largest ever built. [1] [2] It is a BucyrusErie 2570WS model and cost US50 million. The Ursa Major was one of five large walking draglines operated at Black Thunder, with ...

Folks who live nearby know about the machine — a dragline excavator used for surface mining of coal. Since 1995, it has been unused. That's when demand for coal fell and mining companies cut ...
Although an old dragline can be an essential part of mining operations, the equipment is not without fault or maintenance needs. Bottom line is, draglines don't last forever. They are among miningclass machines with booms that reach hundreds of feet into the sky. The cost of dragline machines is somewhere between 50M and 100M. Some even ...
Design specifications and service. The Big Muskie was a model 4250W dragline and was the only one ever built by the BucyrusErie. With a 220cubicyard (170 m 3) bucket, it was the largest singlebucket digging machine ever created and one of the world's largest mobile earthmoving machines alongside the Ohiobased Marion 6360 stripping shovel called The Captain and the German bucket wheel ...
The Big Muskie, a Model 4250W, was constructed by the BucyrusErie Company in 196669 for Central Ohio Coal after two years of design work. 1 3 The company chose the dragline excavator over a traditional shovel because it could strip 8,000 yards of overburden per hour to allow for the uncovering of highsulfur brown Ohio coal 185feet below ...
Draglines typically can offer a low cost waste removal mining method but are less flexible and have a higher capital cost. Truck/shovel fleets on the other hand are far more flexible with lower capital but generally higher unit costs. "The deployment of draglines and truck/shovel fleets can be varied so that competitiveness (lower costs) can ...
A coal mining company in Center commissioned a 31 million dragline Monday and is about six weeks from putting the massive coal miner to use. BNI Coal hosted the ceremony at its Center Mine. The machine that was previously operated by Mississippi Power Co. for six years is the world's newest 757 Page dragline.
Once the overburden is removed coal is extracted from the 30'+ thick Mammoth coal vein using the same machine. The freshly mined coal is then loaded into Wabco 120 ton haul trucks by a 992C loader. Finally, the trucks transport the coal to a stockpile at the Jeddo #8 Preparation Plant. The BucyrusErie 1450 Dragline, a 65 cubic yard ...

Big Muskie. Big Muskie was a legend among machines while in operation. Also called Muskie and Ol Musky, the machine was a model 4250W BucryusErie dragline. It was the only model ever built, and took two years and some 200,000 hours to construct. When Muskie was built in 1969, it cost 25 million dollars. That's approximately 171 million today!
PERFORMANCE. The mining dragline HS 8300 has been designed to meet the tough conditions in mining environments. The machine delivers power and performance with low cost per ton and high turnover rates. The interlock control system allows for power regeneration in dragline operation, reducing fuel consumption as well as wear and tear of the free ...
The electrically operated dragline stands 286 feet high and required 214 trucks to deliver it in pieces from Mississippi to the mine outside of Center. CENTER A coal mining company in Center ...
No one was injured at the Falkirk Mine, and the two employees aboard dragline 102, also known as Chief Ironsides, were able to exit it safely, according to David Straley, director of government and public affairs for North American Coal Corporation. Straley said the company expects to have the machine up and running within three to 10 days.
The affectionately named "Big Muskie" was a dragline excavator that stripped layers of earth from the surface to expose the shallow coal seams that ran under much of Morgan county. ... operating Big Muskie became unprofitable and it was removed from service in 1991. After failing to find a buyer, the coal company dismantled the machine and ...
Horizontal Tandem Operation. In the horizontal tandem operation (Fig. 1), both the draglines are deployed on the same bench for a fast rate of advance and coal exposure [13, 14].The cut width taken by the draglines will be wider depending upon the operating radius of the draglines [].The leading dragline is deployed on the highwall side and provides a key cut toward the highwall, and after ...
The immense dragline machine was churning along at full production until 1991, when power demands and other factors convinced the owners to shut down," the Roadside America says. ... "The machine was so large it was necessary to ship the components to the coal mining customer in Ohio and erect the machine on site.

In the early 1960s, increased production was needed to meet rising demand for coal by Muskingum River Power Plant. The increased mining capability was achieved with Big Muskie, a BucyrusErie 4250W dragline. Huge by any standards, the 4250W was the largest walking dragline ever built. It also was the biggest machine ever to move on land.
A generation ago, now maybe two, the rolling hills of western Kentucky reverberated with the rumbles of many great mining machines. Similar to mechanical dinosaurs, these towering machines, some among the largest ever constructed, were emblematic of the scale and import of the area's healthy coal industry. From the mid1960s through the late ...
